Proud Moment for TAMSA!
Our Patron,Dr. Ntuli Kapologwe, presented on Africa’s Unique Needs, Practices, and Opportunities to Eradicate Extreme Poverty, Hunger, and Malnutrition at the World Health Summit in New Delhi on 25th April, 2025.
Hunger and malnutrition remain critical challenges across sub-Saharan Africa. One in three children facing severe food poverty globally lives in sub-Saharan Africa, totaling 59 million children. These conditions present a significant barrier to unlocking the region’s full health and economic potential through human capital development.
Africa is currently the only continent experiencing rising levels of food insecurity, poverty, and all forms of malnutrition. The number of stunted children has increased from 54.4 million to 63.1 million, with a regional stunting rate of 30%, significantly higher than the global average of 22.3%. Stunting has profound and lasting impacts on survival, educational performance, future earnings, and overall human capital development.
Together, Africa and India represent 36% of the global population. However, we account for a disproportionate share of global malnutrition:
- 69.4% of the world’s undernourished people
- 67.0% of the world’s children under five who are stunted
- 75.8% of the world’s children under five who are wasted
In response to these alarming trends, East Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) is committed to expanding partnerships and collaborations aimed at addressing these pressing challenges and driving sustainable progress.
